Pressure Relief Cushions
Wheelchair Support
It is essential that a wheelchair’s seat should provide stability and comfort and support good posture, especially so when the chair is used for long periods of time. An ill-fitting cushion or uncomfortable seat can lead to pressure sores. This is where a specialist pressure relief cushion can make sitting more comfortable.
Karomed is a major supplier of pressure redistributing products that are widely used throughout the NHS and private sector. Its patented Transflo cushion incorporates two gel sacks within the foam composite that allow the seating profile to change automatically and the user’s position to be accommodated. The cushion’s polyurethane-coated cover is waterproof and has concealed zips. It is also vapour permeable and stretchable and available in sizes up to 21 inches. Standard, wedge and ellipse shapes are available and cushion heights of 2 or 3.5 inches.
Other cushions in the Karomed range include the Transvisco, a product incorporating visco foam that reduces interface pressure without restricting movement, and the Transair 250. This cushion for patients at high risk of pressure sores uses a combination of foam and alternating air and is powered by mains electricity. It electronically assesses the user’s weight and reacts accordingly.
