Lever-Driven Propulsion For Wheelchairs

NuDrive

NuDrive is a new propulsion accessory designed to fit manual wheelchairs.  It consists of levers that attach to the wheels, allowing the user to move forwards, backwards, manoeuvre and reverse without having to grip the wheel rims to do so.  The NuDrive is easy to affix and to operate; it reduces the risk of strain and injury to the shoulders and improves wheelchair posture.  It was designed in conjunction with wheelchair users living with a range of conditions and disabilities.

The force required to propel a wheelchair is reduced by up to 40% with the NuDrive.  As the user no longer needs to turn the wheel rims to move, the possibility of injury to the hands and wrists is lessened.  The accessory easily attaches to almost any manual wheelchair with 24 inch metal-spoked wheels.  The drive units and wheel adaptors are lightweight (1.5kg and 1.1kg respectively) and simple to transport.  Uneven ground poses no problem for the NuDrive, which is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Snap-lock technology permits the wheel adaptors to be fitted in seconds, adding very little extra width to the chair owing to their slimline design.  The drive units (levers) can then be clicked into place or removed as necessary.  The two hand levers are effortlessly pushed down to propel the occupant forwards; to brake or turn, one or both levers are pulled inwards.  The levers require no hand or finger dexterity, just simple arm movements.  The aluminium components are adjustable with quick-release disconnection.
